Color Soundation

Children's Classes are HMA's most renowned programs. Our Beginning Music for Kids (BMK) classes all use the COLOR SOUNDATION method, our unique education system that introduces essential music skills to children at an early age. Kids learn the fundamentals of music study, with an emphasis on developing pitch and rhythm―two important elements best learned early in every musician's life.

Development of pitch perception requires training of both absolute pitch and relative pitch ability. Students in BMK classes start developing and internalizing these abilities by using our distinctive technique of singing scale systems. Scientific studies of the acquisition of pitch perception have shown that it is only in the early formative years (ages 3--6) that an exceptional sense of pitch can be acquired.

During a typical BMK class children enjoy the benefits of group play and socialization, and will experience hands-on exploration of ensemble playing with hand bells, xylophones, and other basic percussion instruments such as drums, tambourines, castanets, and rhythm sticks. Students will also learn music literacy and sight reading through the COLOR SOUNDATION approach involving note recognition by color coding. Students begin to learn songs based on the color scale and eventually progress into using standard notation.

COLOR SOUNDATION based group classes are also available for keyboard training for ages 7--12. Besides group classes, students ages 5 and up may take traditional private music lessons. Please review our full list of available classes.
